What hardware is required? Most installations will only require us to mount a small white box and an antenna outside of the home. A single ethernet cable will be run from this box into your home to your computer. We will require one outlet near the computer to power our hardware. Your computer will need to have a network card in order to connect to the internet. |
Do I have to install additional software? You do not have to install any software specifically for Pluto Wireless Internet. We do recommend that you have anti-virus and anti-spyware software installed, but it is not required for your internet service to work. |
What is a site survey?Pluto Wireless Internet is a wireless service that uses line-of-sight (LOS) technology. What this means is that Pluto Wireless Internet requires a semi-visual line of sight between the primary point of service and your location. Distance and physical obstructions can affect availability and will determine whether or not Pluto Wireless Internet can be provided at your location. To make this determination, a Pluto representative will come to your location and conduct a site survey. A survey typically takes about an hour and generally requires access to your roof or some other high point at your location. |

What is a typical installation?A typical installation involves an antenna with an attached radio on your building, a small power adapter located near your computer, and a cable connecting the two. A network cable runs from the power adapter to your PC or network hub.The antenna will typically be installed in a location that faces the central antenna tower that your internet service is being provided from. The cable from this antenna runs into the house and attached to a small power adapter that needs to be plugged into a standard grounded outlet, and can be attached to the wall or placed on a shelf or the floor. The adapter has an Ethernet port that you can plug any standard Ethernet device into. This port is the demarcation point for Pluto Wireless Internet. From the Ethernet port in, the network is yours. A typical installation will take 1 - 2 hours. We try to stay under an hour, but please allow 2 just to be safe. |
Are there other installation options? If the signal strength is strong enough at your location, you may be able to have an indoor installation. In this case, the antenna and radio would both be located indoors and no holes are necessary. There is no additional cost or savings to this type of installation.Larger Antenna If the signal strength is not quite enough at your location, we may be able to get a strong enough signal with a slightly larger antenna. This would be your choice and may be an additional cost, depending on the antenna. PoE On occasion the technician may suggest a PoE installation. This may happen in situations where a strong signal is not available at your house, but may be at a nearby structure such as a barn or tree. The technician could install the antenna and radio in special outdoor enclosures and run a cable (carrying power and data) into your house. This installation would cost extra due to the extra equipment and time. |

How long does it take to get Pluto Wireless Internet installed? The first step to a successful relationship is a fast, courteous installation. Once we determine that service might be possible at your location, a Pluto Wireless Internet representative will set up an appointment to conduct a site survey. If possible, we will perform a standard installation at that time or evaluate non-standard installation options.Service provisioning, from request to completion, typically requires 3 to 5 business days. |
Who owns the equipment? If you are renting the equipement, Pluto Incorporated maintains ownership of the antenna, radio, and all mounting hardware. We will install it and remove it, when necessary, but you will be responsible for its safe keeping in the interim. If you purchase the equipment, then you own the equipment. |

How secure is Pluto Wireless Internet?Stories about wireless security show up in the media on a regular basis, but they rarely tell the whole story. There are two important factors that are often overlooked. First, the term "wireless" is very broad. While there are, in fact, some lingering security flaws in Wi-Fi technologies, fixed wireless technologies, such as those that Pluto Wireless uses, are fairly secure. The second commonly overlooked factor is that the Internet itself is not secure. With a wired connection, it is fairly trivial for someone to physically hack your data through a telephone junction box. Relatively speaking, Pluto Wireless Internet's network is more secure than comparable wired alternatives such as DSL and dial-up, but that's not really important. Once your data leaves your computer, it's a big bad world out there. It is important to take the same precautions with wireless as you would with any other Internet connection:

Is this technology safe to be around?Yes, very safe. The equipment we use is regulated by the FCC under the same guidelines as those for cordless phones. The power output is less than a microwave oven and you'll receive more radiation from your refrigerator compressor motor than you will from our equipment. Also keep in mind that you hold a cell phone to your head and stand next to your microwave oven and refrigerator, but our wireless equipment is usually outside your house and pointing away. |
Can you ensure coverage at my location?A single wireless point of presence (WiPOP) can cover distances ranging from a few hundred feet to several miles, depending on equipment, location and surrounding terrain. To ensure full coverage, several WiPOPs have to be strategically placed throughout a town. Pluto Wireless Internet generally starts installing WiPOPs where the most customer interest exists and expands as demand dictates. Due to this process, full coverage of an entire town will take time. For towns interested in full coverage immediately, assistance from the local government or local organizations can greatly accelerate the process. Please contact us if you are interested in getting more information about how to cover your entire town. |

There is an early termination fee of $500 if you choose to discontinue service prior to the end of your contract term. Month to Month plans are available for an additional monthly charge. |
Can I run a web server or FTP server on Pluto Wireless Internet?Web Servers and FTP servers are not permitted on our residental offerings. If you are in need of web space, please contact our sales team for options that may be available to you. |
Why is my Bitorrent, Kazaa, or other peer to peer download so slow?Peer to Peer download tools such as Kazaa, Limewire, and Bitorrent implement technologies that continue to use bandwidth even after you have finished your download session. This additional bandwidth usage is to no advantage to you or the rest of our customers, and actually will cause degradation of everyone's service. To minimize this impact we deprioritize this traffic within our network. |
